Tampa Adds Courts at Davis Islands, Duran and Plymouth
The city is retrofitting and resurfacing courts to keep up with pickleball demand.

The short version
In May 2025, the City of Tampa announced more pickleball courts, including a retrofitted multi-use court on Davis Islands and resurfaced courts at Duran Park and Plymouth Playground. Once the work is done, Tampa will have 59 outdoor and nine indoor pickleball courts citywide, with the busiest play at Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park and Macfarlane Park. The new courts are free and first-come.
In May 2025, the City of Tampa announced more pickleball courts to keep up with a sport that has outgrown the courts available. The additions include a retrofitted multi-use court on Davis Islands at 155 Columbia Drive, plus resurfaced courts at Duran Park and Plymouth Playground. Once the work is finished, the city will have 59 outdoor pickleball courts and nine indoor, and all of the new outdoor courts are free and first-come.
Tampa is adding pickleball by painting multi-use lines on existing courts, like this neighborhood setup.
What the city is doing
Rather than build everything from scratch, Tampa is adding capacity by converting existing courts. On Davis Islands, the city resurfaced and repainted a basketball court at 155 Columbia Drive into a multi-use court that serves both basketball and pickleball, with use sorted on a first-come basis. The same approach is coming to Duran Park and Plymouth Playground, where existing basketball courts are being resurfaced and lined for both sports. WUSF reported the plan in May 2025.
It is a practical way to meet demand. The city's Parks and Recreation department estimates that 750 to 1,000 pickleball players use Tampa courts every day, and shared-use lines on a court that was sitting half-empty get more people playing without the cost and time of a full build.
The trade-off with a shared court is that you take it as it comes. On a multi-use court, whether it is basketball or pickleball that day is sorted first-come among whoever shows up, so bring your own net if the park does not keep one on site and be ready to rotate with the hoops crowd. For dedicated pickleball with permanent nets, the larger parks below are the more reliable bet.
Note
The Davis Islands multi-use court is not the same as the tennis courts on the island. The Sandra W. Freedman Tennis Complex, with eight clay courts, is a dedicated tennis center on Davis Islands and is unchanged. The new pickleball lines are on a separate court at 155 Columbia Drive.
